Alberta is making a remarkable comeback at the 2024 Scotties

For the second year in a row, the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts made an amazing comeback. After the Northwest Territories erased a seven-point deficit to beat Ontario 10-9 on Tuesday, Alberta came back from a 6-1 deficit to beat Northern Ontario 10-9 in 11 games.

One reason for Alberta’s comeback is that they were aggressive and put a lot of pieces into play. Alberta skip Selena Sturmay stole a point in the eighth end and three points in the ninth end. Sturmay explains why the comeback happened.

“Yes, we ended up swapping a few stones,” explained Sturmay, who had a straighter stone on the first ends that was missing the curls. She explained that not all stones are the same, “and it’s difficult to see something when each stone does something different.”

Team Alberta was also the first Scotties 2024 team to reach the playoffs. Sturmay was just happy that Alberta managed to prevail and said their playoff berth was “amazing.”

Three more teams joined Alberta (6-1) in the playoffs. They are Canada (6-1), Rachel Homan from Ontario (6-0) and Jennifer Jones from Manitoba (5-1). In Pool A, Northern Ontario controls its own destiny and advances to the playoffs with a win over Kaitlyn Lawes of Manitoba. British Columbia’s Corryn Brown will make the playoffs if British Columbia beats Alberta and Northern Ontario loses. If Northern Ontario and British Columbia lose, it could be a five-way tie if Quebec beats Prince Edward Island. If there is a five-way tie, the five teams compete against each other as a tiebreaker. In games played between the five teams, Northern Ontario is 2-2, Manitoba is 2-2, Saskatchewan is 2-2, Quebec is 2-2 and British Columbia is 2-2. In a five-way tie scenario, Lawes advances based on the last checker drawn.

In Pool B it is much easier to understand. A playoff spot is available. If British Columbia’s Clancy Grandy beats Manitoba’s Kate Cameron, they’re in. However, they could be eliminated if Cameron wins twice today.
