Alberta Health Services WinSport Therapy Pool closed

by Naomi Parham

Two therapy tubs used by athletes at WinSport Canada Olympic Park are closed, according to online inspection reports from Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Documents released Monday state that both the Polar Plunge and Thermal Plunge pools, defined as pools by the AHS, were closed at the training facility due to a fault in the treatment systems.

According to AHS, automatic controls in both pools did not supply chlorine or acid, meaning the water in them was not “continuously disinfected.”

“This violates Section 13(1) of Alberta Public Swimming Pool Regulation 204/2014, which states: ‘Subject to Section 12(2), the water in a public swimming pool shall be continuously disinfected during use,'” AHS wrote in the inspection report .

In addition to the system failure, AHS said staff at the facility did not conduct testing properly and several processes meant to ensure the safety of visitors were not implemented.

“Free chlorine, combined chlorine and pH were not tested daily,” AHS wrote.

The report, based on an inspection carried out on December 13, found that a manual test of the water found a pH of 8.1.

Accordingly Alberta Health GuidelinesPools must have a pH value of no more than 7.6.

In the inspection reports, AHS said the pools must remain closed until WinSport employees can repair or replace the automated controls and ensure all safety plans and procedures are in place and accessible to all employees.

CTV News reached out to WinSport and facility staff said the pools in the inspection reports were actually therapeutic tubs and are generally not intended for public use.

“(They are) a hot tub and a cold bath,” said Dale Oviatt of WinSport. “(They are) only used by those athletes supported by CSI Calgary.”

“As stated in the closure notice, the problem is due to a malfunction of the automatic controls. A contractor is working to complete the repairs and will reopen once the repairs are complete.”

Full inspection reports for both pools can be found at the AHS website.
