CUPE is part of a broad coalition urging the federal government to comply with a United Nations decision calling on the Canadian government to ensure everyone has access to health care, regardless of their immigration status.
The decision of the UN Human Rights Committee is thanks to the courageous advocacy of the late Nell Toussaint. Nell was a universal health care advocate and human rights defender who was denied health care when she needed it because of her immigration status. She died on January 9, 2023, but her fight for justice continues.
It is important to increase pressure before a key UN deadline on February 12th. Have your voice heard by signing and sharing the Canadian Health Coalition’s online action aimed at key federal ministers.
CUPE has signed one Joint letter They call on Health Minister Mark Holland, Justice Minister Arif Virani and other relevant ministers to accept the recommendations made as part of a review of Canada’s human rights record at the UN Human Rights Council and to ensure access to health care without discrimination based on immigration status.
CUPE remembers Nell and strengthens her fight by honoring her for Black History Month 2024.
