Inuit politician Mary Simon has been appointed Governor General of Canada. She became the first representative of the indigenous peoples of the North in this position. This was reported by the CBC.
Simon is known as an advocate for Inuit (Eskimos) rights. She was born in northern Quebec in the village of Canjiqualujjuac to an Englishman and an Inuit woman. During her career, Simon was Ambassador of Canada to Denmark and President of the organization Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
“I can say with confidence that my appointment (as Governor General) represents a historic and inspiring moment for Canada and an important step forward on a long road to reconciliation,” said Simon. She gave her speech in English and Inuktitut.
In his new position, Simon hopes to serve the Canadian people, as well as contribute to improving the situation of vulnerable citizens, including representatives of Indigenous peoples. “As an indigenous resident, I truly understand that there is pain and suffering in our country,” she said.
