The men’s volleyball match at the 2020 Olympics on Friday (7/30) began with the Canada vs Venezuela duel at Ariake Arena in Tokyo which ended 3-0. Nicholas Hoag and Stephen Maar were the stars for Canada, scoring 16 and 15 points respectively.
Glenn Hoag’s men finished the first set 25-13 in 23 minutes. However, Venezuela, who had always lost before, offered maximum resistance in the next set. Ronald Sarti’s troops had reached position 24-22 after the failed dig at Graham Vigrass. However, Hoag secured the score 25-22.
In the third set, Canada needed 22 minutes for a landslide 25-12 victory. This makes Venezuela the first team to be eliminated from Pool A. This South American team has always lost in 4 matches. In fact, Venezuela could only win one set and fell in 12 more sets.
On the other hand, the competition of Pool A hardens to qualify for the top 8. This is inseparable from Poland’s 3-0 victory over host Japan at Ariake Arena. In 1 hour 34 minutes, Vital Heynen’s men won in a row 22-25, 21-25 and 24-26.
The tenacity of Japan, which continues to be able to force Poland to narrowly win, is not enough to block the opponent. The Polish player with the most points is Wilfredo Leon who has 17 points.
With Poland qualifying, Canada and Japan face an all-out battle in the final Pool A match on Sunday (1/8/2021).
In the Pool B match, Brazil won a spectacular 3-1 victory over the United States at Ariake Arena. In the first set, Brazil, who were the defending men’s volleyball champions, were forced to work hard and even lost 30-32 to the United States.
However, the momentum won in the second set. In the condition of the score 23-23, the failed counter Torey Defalco scored Isaac Santos. Then Alan Souza scored 25-23 when Erik Shoji couldn’t stop his action.
After getting out of the tension, Brazil was more fluid finishing the game with 25-21 and 25-20. It was Brazil’s third victory in 4 matches in Pool B. On the other hand, the United States had to swallow their second loss.
