Walmart announces changes in Canada

by Naomi Parham

Walmart Canada says it will invest nearly $1 billion this fiscal year in a series of projects designed to modernize the retail giant’s Canadian presence.

The spending includes more than $300 million in store remodels and renovations.

Some of the chain’s stores are being remodeled to offer larger product areas with an expanded product assortment, more space for employees to prepare customer orders and clearer aisle markings.

Walmart will also bring a “store of the future” to Mississauga, Ontario, where shoppers will instead place electronic devices normally stored in product cases in open displays to allow for more interaction.

Also in the electronics department, customers can see real-time product availability, scan a QR code to place orders, and experience instant delivery from an on-site associate.

The location is rounded off by a health center that combines Walmart’s pharmacy, vision center and medical clinic in one area.

The changes are part of a five-year transformation Walmart Canada announced in July 2020 to overhaul its store infrastructure and customer experience with $3.5 billion in improvements.
