United States government officials have issued a warning against travel to Canada, given the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases as the Omicron variant spreads.
The US CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and State Department have placed Canada at the top of their respective travel advisory lists.
The CDC has moved Canada to its “Tier 4: Very High Risk” list, while the State Department has moved the northern neighbor of the United States to its “Tier 4: Do Not Travel” advisory list.
Additionally, the CDC added the island of Curacao to its Tier Four list, bringing the total number of destinations worldwide, the agency says, that travelers should avoid to about 80.
The United States lifted border restrictions with Canada and Mexico for fully vaccinated foreign nationals in November, ending a travel ban that had been in place since March 2020 as part of an effort to combat the pandemic of Covid-19. .
Last December, the Canadian government advised against all non-essential international travel for at least four weeks and its health minister, Jean-Yves Duclos, said the advice would be reviewed and possibly extended.
