Health Canada has seized a number of unauthorized health products from a store in Richmond, B.C., that it says could pose “serious health risks” to users.
According to the federal ministry, the Tokyo Beauty and Healthcare store, located in the Aberdeen Center shopping center, sold a range of items for skin treatment or cold symptom relief that were labeled as prescription or controlled medicines.
Health Canada said two of the items contained aminocaproic acid, an ingredient in prescription medications that is used to relieve bleeding but can cause dizziness, nausea and muscle weakness.
According to the agency, this is the second time in recent months that unauthorized health products have been seized from a beauty and health store in Tokyo.
Last September, Health Canada said it had seized a number of products at another Richmond location whose ingredients should only be used “under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional.”
According to the ministry, selling unapproved health products is illegal because they have not been tested for safety and quality by Health Canada. This can be dangerous if certain ingredients interact with other medications or foods.
