Santo Domingo, Dominican RepublicThe Dominican driver and the Haitian hostess of the bus that was kidnapped in Haiti last Sunday were released this Saturdayreported the Dominican embassy in Port-au-Prince.

The driver Martin Dixof Dominican nationality, was released because he is in poor health, according to the Dominican ambassador in Port-au-Prince, Farouk Miguel Castilloin statements to the Dominican media.

The source did not specify the name of the flight attendant, a Haitian national, or report on the situation of the passengers on the bus, including eight Turkish citizens.

The Turks are aid workers who regularly travel to Haiti to work on education projects, Turkey’s honorary consul in Port-au-Prince, Hughes Josué, told Efe.

The bus, from the Dominican company Metro, was hijacked last Sunday in the town of Croix-des-Bouquets, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, in an area controlled by the gang 400 Mawozo.

In this same area, the Dominican diplomat Carlos Guillén Tatis was kidnapped on April 28, who remained in captivity for four days before being released.

Last Thursday, Haitian police foiled an attempt to hijack another passenger bus in the Croix-des-Bouquets area.

400 Mawozo kidnapped last year, in the same area, a group of 17 foreign religious, including 16 Americans and one Canadian, who remained in captivity for two months.

Kidnappings have increased in the past two years in Haiti with the rise of gangs, which have made ransoms one of their main sources of funding.
