Trudeau: Prime Minister’s role is ‘crazy’ but he is determined to stay

by Ainsley Ingram

Montreal –

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed in an interview with Radio-Canada on Friday to continue his duties as head of government, despite what he described as the personal challenges the office brings.

Trudeau jokingly told radio host Alec Castonguay during a lively segment on the “Midi info” program that he thinks every day about quitting his “crazy,” “super hard” and sometimes even “challenging” job.

However, Trudeau said significant domestic and foreign policy challenges would still motivate him to stay in office and face the federal election scheduled for next year.

Women’s rights, the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people and progress on climate change are among the issues Trudeau said are currently at stake in Canada, and he pointed to global attacks on democracies by what he called extreme populism.

He stressed that Canadians would have to make fundamental decisions about what kind of country they want in the next election.

He said he is in politics to serve, not to be popular, and he is convinced he has something to offer as prime minister.

“I could not be the man I am and give up the fight at this moment,” Trudeau said during the French-language interview.

“If I didn’t doubt what I do almost every day, I wouldn’t be human.”
