Three people were stabbed to death in a university classroom in the Canadian city of Waterloo on Wednesday and one person was arrested, police said.

The extent of the injuries in the attack at the University of Waterloo’s Hagey Hall was initially unknown. The victims were taken to a hospital.

One person was arrested, police said. Authorities gave no motive for the attack and said more details would be released as they became available.

Yusuf Kaymak, a student at the University of Waterloo, told CTV News the attack happened at a gender studies class.

“The guy came in and asked the teacher if he was the professor, he said ‘yes,’ then he pulled out a knife and after that everyone just ran out,” Kaymak told CTV.

“I ran out and as we were walking outside a kid was stabbed. He was bleeding from his arm. “I don’t know what happened to the professor,” he said.

Kaymak said there were about 40 students in the class at the time.

Authorities expected an increased police presence “as officers continue to clear buildings and ensure public safety.”

The University of Waterloo tweeted that it was supporting the police in their investigation. There is no further risk for the campus community, it said.

Classes scheduled for Wednesday evening at Hagey Hall have been canceled, but all other campus operations are continuing as usual, the university said in a tweet.
