“I would have liked a school like this too!” Danielle Carron from Canada, international parliamentary scholarship holder of Bettina Lugk (SPD), member of the Bundestag, was enthusiastic. With the deputy, she attended the professional college of Placida-Viel.
The school that won the German School Prize presented itself to the local representative and her team. First of all very classic: the director Gaby Petry evoked the practice of the school, which began ten years ago to “shake up school daily life”. A special daily structure with two hours per day for self-organized learning according to the Dalton concept, digitization and a mentoring concept are the essential elements.
But then the student council took over the program. Four young learners walked through the school, showed the Dalton concept in practice, connected with learners, demonstrated applications and answered many questions. School representative Leonie Meyer showed Bettina Lugk, who at one point sat comfortably in the middle of a group of schoolchildren and was told in detail by the pupils about their experiences at school, but also of their future projects.
Professional future was also addressed in the ensuing discussion. Bettina Lugk was very impressed with the Dalton concept: “Knowing how to organize is a skill that is in high demand by employers. Placida-Viel vocational school prepares you for the world of work. After all, not everyone has to study. But skills are also in demand during studies, as SV member Henning Kaufmann pointed out: “I feel perfectly prepared for my future studies here.”
And student spokesperson Justus Kreutz summed up the day: “It’s good to see that politicians take the time to listen and see where students have problems!”
