If you’re having trouble finding a name for your baby, you may find inspiration in a new list of popular names.
Statistics Canada released its annual top 20 baby name list last week.
Comparing the 2023 list with 2022
According to the government agency, Noah and Olivia remained the most popular names for boys and girls in the 2023 list Baby Name Observatory Page online.
Liam took second place among boys in 2023, the same as in 2022. Emma also remained the second most popular name among girls.
Theodore replaced William in third place for the boys. Meanwhile, third place for girls has not changed at Charlotte.
Leo and Amelia remained in fourth place.
William dropped to fifth place, while Sophia retained her position in fifth place.
Data collection
StatCan said the data comes from the Canadian Vital Statistics Birth database, which annually collects demographic information from provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all live births in Canada, as well as the Quebec Pension Plan baby name list in Quebec.
According to StatCan, fewer births and stillbirths may have been recorded in the data because data collection took less time due to improvements in methodology and timeliness.
“Births from last year are considered preliminary and previous data may have been revised,” it wrote on its website.
Missing first names, those consisting of a single letter and those with a frequency of less than five are excluded.
“Frequency” refers to the frequency with which a first name was recorded for a baby over the course of the year.
