Origins of the community

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, several families from the Bekaa Valley in what was then Syria (now Lebanon) emigrated to Canada. In the 1930s, several dozen Lebanese Arab families successfully established themselves in Edmonton’s business and social circles.

This group became the nucleus from which the mosque community flourished, spawning many more mosques when Muslims migrated to Alberta.
