The Honorable Michael D. Tochor was appointed to the Court of King’s Bench for Saskatchewan in 2018.
Prior to his appointment as a judge, Associate Chief Justice Tochor was a partner at the Regina Litigation Group of MLT Aikins LLP. He was extensively active in administrative law and public law matters and represented various supervisory authorities and clients before administrative courts. He also chaired the Saskatchewan Police Commission from 2002 to 2008. A significant part of his practice included acting in labor arbitration and workplace health and safety matters. He has appeared before courts and tribunals in Saskatchewan, as well as before the Federal Court, the Tax Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Associate Chief Justice Tochor also has extensive criminal trial and appellate experience, including both jury and non-jury trials. He has authored numerous publications and lectures on criminal law topics for magazines and various legal education seminars. He was a faculty member of the National Criminal Law Program and lectured annually at the Law Society’s Bar Admission courses and the Canadian Center for Professional Legal Education. In 2004 he was awarded the King’s Counsel award and named Best Lawyers in Canada and as a “Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation Canada.
Associate Chief Justice Tochor’s past involvement includes being a founding member of The Book Project, which has delivered over 55,000 books to several correctional facilities in Saskatchewan. He also represented Saskatchewan on the board of the RCMP Foundation, an Ottawa-based charity focused on supporting at-risk Indigenous youth.
Associate Chief Justice Tochor earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan and was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1984.
