The disc golfer from Cranbrook wins the Canadian national championship

by Horace Rogers

Casey Hanemayer, a professional disc golfer from Cranbrook, BC, is the 2023 Canadian National Champion.

Hanemayer clinched his Canadian title in dramatic fashion, coming from a deficit in the final round and eventually beating Bryan Freese by a single shot after hitting a 30-foot putt on the last hole of the tournament that lasted this year to the Birdie Sunk Place in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The full Mixed Pro Open (MPO) division of this year’s championship featured 45 of the country’s top players, including touring pro Thomas Gilbert.

While Hanemayer (-29) and Freese (-28) were down to just one shot, the field was hot on their heels with three players sharing third place at -27 and Gilbert just three shots behind them.

“The feeling is great, it’s such a great event to have on your belt,” Hanemayer said. “This win is the highlight of my career so far. “It was a great performance in a solid field of players.”

This is Hanemayer’s first Canadian title, but last year he came close, earning a podium at the 2022 Canadian Nationals in PEI

It is also his third straight win after victories at the Edmonton Open and the BC Open.

“The level of trust is high right now,” Hanemayer said. “The month has been great, I just want to keep pushing, be consistent and the results will come.”

Hanemayer will look to maintain that momentum for the remainder of the season, which ends for him again in Rock Hill, SC at the 2023 United States Disc Golf Championship, one of the sport’s biggest championships.

Hanemayer is now the current standings leader on the Canadian Disc Golf Tour.

The tournament was filmed by Invermere based disc golf media company Parked Pro and will be available on their website Youtube channel soon.
