Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, defeated No. 14 seed Karolina Muchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the round of eight of the Canadian Open on Thursday night at the Stade IGA in Montreal.
Although the game only lasted two hours and 47 minutes, it lasted more than nine hours due to the rain in Montreal. However, Swiatek was able to stay focused throughout the day, beating the number 14 in three sets.
The win also secures the 22-year-old her first place finish next week, ensuring she tops the women’s standings for the 72nd week in a row.
Swiatek, ranked 1st, next plays the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard player Leylah Fernandez and American qualifier Danielle Collins.
The 22-year-old Pole beat Karolina Pliskova (7-6 (6), 6-2) in the preliminary round of the Rogers Cup.
In previous rounds of the Rogers Cup, Muchova, who is ranked 17th, defeated Russia’s Anastasia Potapova (7-6(4), 6-2) and Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (7-5, 6-4).
