Jessica Pegula defeated world no meets.
World no.
“She always makes it difficult but of course it’s incredibly rewarding to beat world number one and I’m sure that will give me a lot of confidence for tomorrow and the next few weeks,” Pegula said, securing one place in her first Canadian Open final.
Neither player was able to hold until Pegula took a 4-2 lead and the American then clinched a double break before producing a pair of aces on her next service game to end the opener .
It seemed like Swiatek had settled in well as she opened the second set with her first serve of the day, followed by two breaks to take a 3-1 lead.
However, Pegula fought back and extended a 5-4 lead after beating Swiatek for an eighth time but failed to serve the match as the Pole leveled the frame before forcing the deciding set.
Swiatek clinched the first eight points of the third set and went 2-0 up, but Pegula kept his cool, twice recovering from a breakdown en route to one of the biggest wins of her career.
