Temporary replacement of Daniel Tribunier

by Rex Daniel

Daniel Trepannier resigned as Canadian Boxing’s High Performance Director on Sunday. However, as Le Journal learned, he will step down with a generous severance package.

The information was confirmed by Yvonne Michel, member of the Board of Directors of Boxing Canada.

He explained that Daniel held the position for 14 years. We work to commercial standards.

Michel refused to reveal how much would be paid to Tripanier. It will be in six numbers.

After the allegations against the former permanent employee were made public, there was a flurry of testimonies from former students and current athletes speaking out against the toxic climate and structure that has been put in place at the course of the last decade.

The pressure was on Boxing Canada’s board of directors. Additionally, the International Boxing Association (IBA) withdrew Trepannier’s accreditation for the Women’s World Championship, which runs until May 20 in Turkey.

A gesture that the leaders of the Canadian Federation did not understand.

“Their work had no bearing on our discussions about Daniel’s future,” Michel said. We feel that it is a kind of revenge against Canada, which broke out during the scandal that shook the ATP at the last Olympic Games.

In terms of morals, they have no lesson for us. What they did was an outright intervention.

Council members held daily meetings over the weekend. No one fell out of their chair when Tribanier handed in his resignation letter.

Acting Halpin

Roy Halpin, Executive Director of Boxing Canada, will assume the role of Executive Director of High Performance Boxing. It is Samir El-Mays who will take care of the athletes until further notice.

The search for a new successful director will begin this week. A committee made up of the Athletes’ Committee, county representatives and members of the Board of Directors will try to find the rare pearl.

We will not hide it. The task awaiting Tribanier’s successor is an arduous one. Your task will be to reclaim the noble words of Canadian amateur boxing, which hasn’t won an Olympic medal since 1996.

One thing is certain, do not expect miracles at the Paris 2024 Games. Impossible to change a culture in two years.

Interesting candidates, but…

Who wants this job? Several names have already been mentioned in recent hours. Those who come most often are Ariane Fortin, Vincent Auclair and Stéphane Laroche.

The first confirmed to the “Journal” that she would not apply for the position. Always happy at the helm of the South Korean women’s team.

As for Auclair, it would be a big decision. He has the athletic and academic qualifications to fulfill this role. However, we know he still enjoys being in the gym with amateur and professional boxers.

As for thrones, he would preferably have an advisory role.

As for the coaching job, it’s no surprise that Brazilian João Carlos Soares Gomes de Barros is back in charge. De Barros remained in Montreal after his dismissal from Boxing Canada.

He was fired for administrative reasons while doing well in a gymnasium. Athletes value their experience.
