For the second year in a row, Team Saskatchewan won the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.
It’s a historic win for Skip, Gil Dash and Third Marie Wright, as well as coach Lorraine Arguin. Together they have now won the national championship five times, which has never been done before.
There is an added sense of achievement because they made it in their home province.
“I’m pretty excited because I won the fifth champion[ship] and getting it at home in front of your audience, your family and your friends,” Wright said.
The win is particularly meaningful for Arguin, who decided to step away from coaching after the curling season.
“We are happy about five gold medals. We have been to five finals and won five times, which is a great achievement,” she said.
Moose Gibson, the team’s alternate, was part of four winning national teams.
The 2024 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship was held March 24-30 in Moose Jaw. Eleven teams took part in the event.
Team Sask. played two games a day. They say they were able to rest better at home in Saskatchewan, which benefited their overall game.
Wright hopes the win inspires others in the province to take up wheelchair curling.
“I didn’t think I would ever enjoy curling, and the first time you get on the ice you fall in love with it. Come and give it a try,” she said.
With Arguin’s retirement, it is possible for Team Sask. could look different next year.
