Swiatek sails past Collins, Pegula survives the test

by Horace Rogers

Iga Swiatek made quick work of qualifier Danielle Collins as she earned a 6-1 6-0 win on Wednesday (Aug. 16) and advanced to the third round of the Cincinnati Open while third seed Jessica Pegula survived a tough opening game.

World number one Swiatek beat Collins, 29, seven times, having just two break points and ending a one-sided match in a decent 59 minutes.

“I feel like I was really solid and didn’t make a lot of unforced mistakes,” Swiatek said in her on-pitch interview.

“I really like playing like this because it gives me confidence and I can be proactive from start to finish. So I’m pretty proud of today.”

Swiatek took a 3-0 lead in the opening game and after both players swapped breaks of serve, the top seeded Poland held before closing the set with her fourth break.

Traffic was more one-sided in the second set as a fully focused Swiatek switched to cruise control and barely worked a sweat in a match she finished in style with a break to love.

Earlier, Jessica Pegula had her hands full in her first match since winning the Canadian Open last week as the American overcame a weak start to secure a brave 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3- Victory over the Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan.

Pegula confidently lost the tiebreak in the first set but showed her quality in the second before taking a 3-0 lead in the decider to secure her 27th hard court win of the year.

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, Czech No. 10, defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2 and Russia No. 14 Daria Kasatkina defeated lucky loser Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 6-1.
