Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario, won the 2023 Bobbie Rosenfeld Award on Wednesday, according to Donna Spencer of the Canadian Press. The award is presented annually to the best Canadian female athlete of the year.
McIntosh won four medals in swimming at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She won two gold medals and two bronze medals. The two gold medals came in the women’s 200-meter butterfly and the women’s 400-meter individual medley. McIntosh defended her world titles in both disciplines and also won the gold medal in the women’s 200-meter butterfly and women’s 400-meter individual medley at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. McIntosh also won the bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter freestyle and women’s 4×100-meter medley relay in Fukuoka, along with Kylie Masse of Windsor, Ontario, Sophie Angus of Calgary, Alberta, and Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario.
McIntosh also currently holds the world record in the women’s 400-meter individual medley. At the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto, Ontario on April 1, she achieved a time of 4:25.87.
McIntosh is the tenth Canadian swimmer to win the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award. She followed Phyllis Dewar from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (1934), Irene Strong from Surrey, British Columbia (1949), Marilyn Bell from Toronto (1954 and 1955), Mary Stewart from Vancouver, British Columbia (1961 and 1962), Elaine Tanner from Vancouver (1966), Wendy Cook of Vancouver (1974), Nancy Garapick of Halifax, Nova Scotia (1975), Cindy Nicholas of Toronto (1977) and Penny Oleksiak of Toronto (2016). The award will give McIntosh confidence as she prepares 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
