A magnitude 3.2 seismic event occurred at Creighton Mine early Wednesday morning.
According to Earthquakes Canada, the event occurred at 4:14 a.m. at a depth of 2.53 kilometers underground. To illustrate: seismic events with a magnitude of 5 or less It is very unlikely that any damage will occur.
“Slightly noticeable in Sudbury,” Earthquakes Canada said in its report website.
An official from Vale Ltd. told CTV News in an email that the seismic event was “due to a fault event triggered during a development explosion at the 8330 level.”
“Only one employee was underground during the demolition and he returned safely to the surface,” said Vale spokeswoman Fernanda Trevisan.
“We are currently following our significant seismic event protocol and all affected areas have been isolated. We will thoroughly inspect the affected areas once energy levels return to background levels.”
Trevisan said faulting events often occur from time to time as development interacts with underground geological structures.
“Our emergency response processes are in place to ensure strict safety protocols are followed when seismic events occur,” he said.
