Many students today are probably feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement as they begin a new school year.

With disruptive pandemic measures seemingly behind them, parents and educators say a range of new issues could impact classroom learning this year, including AI technology, affordability and climate change.

While it will be a first day of school like any other in much of the country, those in parts of Canada ravaged by wildfires are returning to a very different landscape.

British Columbia’s government has said no schools were damaged by the fires that ravaged parts of the province, but that doesn’t mean students are spared.

The flames passed near some schools in Kelowna, British Columbia, leaving destruction in their wake.

However, the summer break has been extended for Yellowknife residents.

Normally, students would have returned to their classrooms by August 28, but the city is still under an evacuation order as the fires continue to burn, leaving the school waiting.
