For the first time in his National Hockey League career, Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos of Markham, Ont., scored four goals in a single game. He achieved that feat on Thursday in the Lightning’s 7-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place in Edmonton. It was on a night when the Oilers set a franchise record for most shots in a single game with 57 and still lost. Stamkos becomes the second player to score four goals against the Oilers in 2023-24. He succeeds Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks, who scored four goals in the Canucks’ 8-1 win over the Oilers on October 11. Interestingly, Stamkos and Boeser are the only two players to score four goals in a game during the 2023-24 season.
Stamkos now has 12 career hat tricks. He opened the scoring at 1:07 of the first period on the power play against Nick Paul of Mississauga, Ontario and Nikita Kucherov. Stamkos then tied the game at 6:48 of the third period through Carlyle, Saskatchewan defenseman Haydn Fleury and Conor Sheary. Stamkos then scored the game-winning goal through Sheary at 14:02 of the third period, giving the Lightning a 5-3 lead. With seven seconds left, Carp, Ontario defender Calvin de Haan and Kucherov tied the score into an empty net.
Two Canadians scored for the Lightning. The other was Anthony Cirelli of Etobicoke, Ontario.
In the 2023-24 season, Stamkos recorded 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points. He is a -12 with 14 penalty minutes, 16 power play points, a game-winning goal, 90 shots on goal, 102 faceoff wins, nine blocked shots, 20 hits, five takeaways and 16 giveaways.
With the win, the Lightning improve to a record of 14 wins, 12 regular season losses and five losses and 33 points. They are in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
