Sometimes you don’t have to wear a costume to be a superhero.
The locally shot Spider-Man fan film Spider Island is finally released at Towne Theater in Vernon – with proceeds going to the Vernon Chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Created and directed by Mitchell Vanlerberg, who shoots the video feature Hello Okanagan on Castanet every weekend, the film has seen its first film delayed by more than a year by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, he will premiere at a One Night Only screening at the Towne Theater on November 17, with schedules at 5:30 p.m., 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The film was shot in Vernon in 2019 and is finally hitting the big screen after delays due to COVID restrictions in theaters.
Vanlerberg made the film as a love letter to Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who died a few years ago. The heart of the film is about responsibility and always tries to do the right thing despite the obstacles.
These values are reciprocated in real life when trying to help the community as mental health is a topical issue.
The film follows Peter Parker after four years of being Spider-Man, wanting to nothing more than to get rid of his powers and go back to normal.
However, the people of Manhattan are mysteriously given similar spider powers, and Peter has a choice to finally shed his responsibility. But does everyone understand that with greater power must also come great responsibility?
