Team Canada won its first medal at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. On Saturday, Anthony Shelly of Whistler, British Columbia won the silver medal in the men’s snowboard cross.

Shelly placed behind gold medalist Jonas Chollet of France and ahead of bronze medalist Zion Bethonico of Brazil. Bethonico made Brazilian sports history by becoming the first Brazilian athlete ever to win a medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Brazil has never won a medal in the history of the Winter Olympics, but has won 150 medals in the history of the Summer Olympics (37 gold medals, 42 silver medals and 71 bronze medals).

In the men’s snowboard cross, Shelly won his races in group six, group eight, group nine and group 10. He finished second in group seven, behind only Bethonico in group seven. Shelly then reached the grand final by placing second in the semi-final, only behind Boden Gerry of the USA.

With a silver medal, Team Canada is currently tied for 12th place in the overall medal standings. France is currently at the top with four medals after the first day. They have won gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal.
