REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Naomi Osaka has hinted at a return to training after posting a photo of herself standing on a tennis court and holding a racquet. “A little steep, but it feels good to be back,” the 24-year-old said in social media posts Instagram and Twitter on Saturday (6/11).

The former world number one of Japan, city of Reuters, had previously announced a hiatus from the sport in which he was engaged. Osaka has said she wants to focus on her sanity after her shocking loss in the third round of the US Open last September.

The four-time Grand Slam champion has been fighting for his best form since retiring from Roland Garros in May. At the time, he had stepped down after a dispute with tournament officials over his decision not to attend a mandatory press conference which he said had negatively impacted his mental health.

After losing to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez at Flushing Meadows, Osaka said she was unsure of when she would play her next game.

“I really want to thank everyone for all the great posts, I really appreciate it,” Osaka said.

Osaka rose to fame thanks to its triumph on the sport’s biggest stage before opening discussions about mental health that resonated beyond tennis. It is not clear whether Osaka will compete in the Australian Open in January, where she is a two-time grand slam tournament champion.
