The Maternity Center and delivery teams at McGill University Health Center (MUHC) have won a Salus Global Recognition Award for the second year in a row, a rare achievement for a tertiary care center.
They were recognized for their outstanding participation in moreOB, an interprofessional program designed to improve teamwork, communication and quality of care for effective obstetric risk management.
The two teams are led by a multidisciplinary core team comprised of Ruth-Lynn Fortuné, Sophia Kapellas, Dr. Anne Maude Morency and Dr. Marie-Julie Trahan is jointly managed. Showing great leadership and working diligently to invest in communications, they demonstrated their ever-present commitment to the care, safety and quality of obstetric patients through online and in-person simulations and training.
“Teamwork, dedication, and continued desire to improve the quality of care have led to the optimization of interdisciplinary practice for routine and emergency obstetric settings,” said Ruth-Lynn Fortuné, Perinatal Nursing Continuing Education Instructor at MUHC. “It is so gratifying to see the work of such great teams recognized nationally. It fuels our energy to achieve even more!”
Success with moreOB looks different for every team, but there are five things in common:
1. Effectiveness and function of the core team
2. Management support and involvement
3. Effective and quality communication
4. Commitment and involvement of all professional groups
5. Transfer of what has been learned into practice
Look to the future
This year the teams start with module 9 of moreOB. They will continue projects already underway, including cultural safety, simulations and training activities with other units.
They will also participate in the Birth Outcome Optimization initiative, where they will conduct medical record reviews to determine what could be improved. They will also focus on perinatal bereavement and increase awareness-raising activities.
moreOB is owned by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada and the Canadian Medical Protective Association. The program has enlisted over 16,000 obstetricians at 300 hospitals in Canada and the United States in the 20 years since its inception.
