Robert Macintyre leads the Canadian Open by four strokes thanks to a late surge

by Ainsley Ingram

Scotsman Robert Macintyre was able to make up five strokes on the home stretch and goes into the final day of the RBC Canadian Open with a four-stroke lead.

The 27-year-old seemed to be in trouble early on, starting with a bogey and coming around the corner one stroke over par.

He got back to par with a birdie on the 10th hole, but another miss on the 13th threatened to ruin his quest for his first PGA Tour title.

However, he recovered masterfully and made three birdies in a row before sinking a 30-foot putt for an eagle on the par-5 17th hole and heading to the clubhouse at 14 under par.

Macintyre leads by four strokes ahead of the trio Mackenzie Hughes, Ryan Fox and Ben Griffin.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood is one stroke behind at nine under par after rocketing up the rankings with a bogey-free round of 64 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy fought his way back to success with a round of 65 strokes and five under par.

The Northern Irishman returned to the top 10 at seven under par after a blitz win on the first nine holes at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

“There are still some low scores. It felt like it could have gone better, but I fought my way back into the tournament and hopefully I’ll be within touching distance of the guys tomorrow,” he said in his post-round interview.

“I had a quick practice session on the practice range last night and I felt like it got me back on track. I just felt like my swing was out of sync with everything, so I just worked on tempo and rhythm a little bit.”
