Richmond kid wins double gold in BC martial arts competition

by Horace Rogers

The 2023 Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships took place at SFU.

A seven-year-old athlete and Richmond resident recently won two gold medals at a martial arts competition on Saturday.

Richmond Martial Arts and Josiah Kicks Academy athlete Logan Minshall competed in the annual Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships, held this year at Simon Fraser University.

Minshall won gold in both the WKU Continuous Kick Light Division, a continuous kickboxing competition, and the Sport Karate Point Division, a hybrid of karate and taekwondo competition.

The McKay Elementary student won his first fight in the kickboxing class and went straight to the finals, where he also took first place.

In the sports karate points category, Minshall won 3-1 against Ramsey Farag in the first round and moved on to the next fight against his academy colleague Samuel Monroy, who won 3-0.

In the final of the double-elimination competition, Minshall faced Farag again, but lost 4-3, leading to another gold medal match, eventually winning 5-1.
