Defenseman Jake Walman of Toronto, Ontario, was traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft for later consideration.
Walman joins his third NHL franchise, having previously spent three seasons with the St. Louis Blues from 2020-2022 and then three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 2022-2024.
In the 2023-24 season, Walman scored 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points in 63 games with the Red Wings. He was a -2 with 44 penalty minutes, four power play points, three game-winning goals, one shorthanded point, 108 shots on goal, 151 blocked shots, 42 hits, 18 turnovers and 27 turnovers. Walman set career highs in goals, points, power play points, game-winning goals, shorthanded points and blocked shots.
Walman’s shorthanded point came on November 30 in the Red Wings’ 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Walman set up JT Compher, who scored the first goal 2:29 into the first period.
This was the second time Walman was traded. On March 21, 2022, he was traded by the Blues to the Red Wings with a second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and center Oskar Sundqvist for defensemen Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski. With the draft pick, the Red Wings selected defenseman Andrew Gibson from LaSalle, Ontario.
Ironically, Gibson was also traded by the Red Wings on Tuesday. He was traded from Detroit to Nashville in exchange for right wing Jesse Kiiskinen and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
