TORONTO — “Red Velvet,” a play about the first black actor to appear on a London stage, has earned the top six nominations in the General Theater category at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The Crow’s Theater show received awards in categories such as Best Play and Best Director for Cherissa Richards.
The dramatization of the true story of Ira Aldridge, a black man who starred in 1833’s “Othello,” also garnered recognition from Allan Louis, nominee for best leading role, and Amelia Sargisson, who is in the running for best leading role in one prominent role.
Also competing for Best Production is Uncle Vanya, another Crow’s Theater production; Soulpepper’s Da Kink In My Hair and Our Place, a co-production of A Cahoots Theater and Theater Passe Muraille.
Top musical nominees include Bad Hats Theatre’s “Alice in Wonderland” presented by Soulpepper, which is nominated for 13 awards, and Crow’s Theatre’s “The Shape of Home” which has nine nominations.
Awarded by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, the Doras recognize excellence in local theatre, dance and opera.
The awards will be presented on June 27th at Koerner Hall in Toronto.
