Tory Lanez has been denied bail as he attempts to appeal his conviction in the shooting death of Megan Thee Stallion.
The 31-year-old rapper – real name Daystar Peterson – was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of first-degree assault, discharging a firearm while grossly negligent and possessing a concealed and unregistered firearm in a vehicle in the incident of 2020 – and his lawyers asked a Los Angeles judge to release the star on bail while he fights the verdict.
However, TMZ.com reports that Lanez’s request to live with his wife and son while the appeal goes through court was denied at a hearing on Thursday – meaning he must remain behind bars.
The judge’s reasoning for rejecting the application was, among other things, that the star has been convicted of a violent official act and has a history of violating court orders while also being a Canadian citizen.
Lanez’s lawyers argued the star was in America on an active work visa and had no reason to return to Canada, but bail was still denied.
Following his conviction, the rapper released a statement on Instagram expressing his intention to fight the verdict and regain his freedom. He also refused to apologize to Megan for the incident.
In his statement he wrote: “I have never been intimidated by a difficult time. I will never let a prison sentence eliminate me. No matter how they try to twist my words, I have always maintained my innocence and always will.”
“This week in court I took responsibility for all the verbal and intimate moments I shared with the parties involved… That’s all.”
“I have not apologized in any way for the allegations on which I was wrongfully convicted. “I stand by my stance that I refuse to apologize for something I didn’t do.”
The ‘Say It’ hitmaker added: “I’ve struggled with adversity my whole life and every time it looked like I was going to lose, I came out victorious. This is nothing more than another moment of my back against the wall and my refusal.” Stop fighting until you emerge victorious.
“Hard times don’t last long, tough people do.” To my family, friends and umbrellas: thank you for your continued support. See you soon.”
