YELLOWKNIFE – Germany’s President will arrive in the Northwest Territories today to begin the final leg of his four-day official visit to Canada.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier is received at Yellowknife Airport by Territorial Commissioner Margaret Thom and Mayor Rebecca Alty.

He will accompany Governor General Mary Simon at Joint Task Force North headquarters for a tour and briefing with senior officials.

You will then drive north to the hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk where you will meet with indigenous leaders and community members.

During their stay in Tuktoyaktuk, they plan to visit the Arctic Ocean coast to learn about the effects of climate change and to see homes that have been relocated due to coastal erosion.

You will also attend a presentation on the Smart Ice project, which combines traditional knowledge with modern ice monitoring technology, as well as dog sledding and ice fishing demonstrations.

They will conclude their time in Tuktoyaktuk by attending a community event at Kitti Hall before returning to Yellowknife via Inuvik.

Steinmeier arrived in Ottawa on Sunday, where he attended a reception hosted by the German ambassador, where he spoke about the importance of liberal democracies.

He was in Burnaby, BC and Vancouver on Tuesday, where he toured fuel cell company Cellcentric and participated in a roundtable discussion with German and Canadian business leaders.

Steinmeier is scheduled to leave Canada for Germany on Wednesday evening.
