Canada’s Brendan Potser defeated Norway’s Stephen Wolstad 6-4 at the World Curling Championships on Thursday – an important victory for the host nation.
The victory secured a place in the Canadian playoffs, qualifying the country for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. After the game, the World Curling Federation confirmed to CBC Sports that Canada won.

The top six teams are in contention for the world championship when they qualify for the Olympics after the first round on Friday.
The top two seeds serve the cake in Saturday’s semi-finals. Sergei Glukov’s Russian Curling Federation team and Niklas Edin of Sweden closed the semi-finals 10-2 on Thursday.
John Schuster of the United States reached the playoffs with a 9-3 record.
Scotland’s Bruce Mouth and Canada are 8-4, while Norway and Switzerland’s Peter de Cruz are 7-5. They will fight for it on Friday for the last three remaining beds. Canada won the round robin (4-8) over Germany on Friday.
The third and sixth teams will compete in qualifying, and the winners will be in the bottom four. Sunday medal games.
