Poilievre’s Conservatives maintain lead over Trudeau’s Liberals: poll

by Ainsley Ingram

OTTAWA –

The Conservatives have maintained their summer lead in the polls, according to new figures from Leger.

Leger has released the results of an online survey conducted over the weekend with more than 1,600 Canadian respondents.

Among decided voters, Tory leader Pierre Poilievre’s party has the support of 39 percent of respondents, putting it 12 points ahead of the federal Liberals.

The poll suggests a shift of just a few points in favor of the Tories compared to last month, while the Bloc Quebecois lost seven points and is level with the Liberals at 29 percent support among Quebec voters.

The poll came in the days following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bombshell announcement in which he claimed the Indian government could be behind the killing of a Sikh leader near Vancouver.

The results were weighted by demographics, language and region and cannot be assigned a margin of error as online surveys are not truly random samples.

The online poll took place from September 22 to 24, shortly after the Liberals unveiled a new housing policy after withdrawing support from the Tories, who had been ahead in the Leger polls since late May.

The new results covered a Canadian sample of 1,652 people, and of eligible voters, nearly 16 percent said they were undecided.

The poll found 26 percent of respondents believed Poilievre was the best person to be prime minister, compared to 20 percent who chose Trudeau and 14 percent who chose NDP leader Jagmeet Singh.

Only a third of those respondents say they are satisfied with Trudeau’s government, a similar result to a month ago. During this period, the proportion of respondents who expressed fear of losing their job fell by five percentage points to 33 percent.

The survey also surveyed 1,000 Americans who said they felt somewhat more confident about their household finances. No longer on a salary accounted for 42 percent of U.S. respondents, compared to 46 percent of Canadians surveyed.

Of Americans surveyed, 52 percent rejected US President Joe Biden, similar to a month ago.
