Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) remains among the 10 most polluting energy companies on the planet, according to the 2020 analysis carried out by the American Institute for Climate Responsibility.
The Mexican giant maintains its place among the 20 companies responsible for the emission of 493,000 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) into the environment, which represents 35% of all polluting emissions from 1965 to 2018.
The report states that the oil company now headed by Octavio Romero Oropeza is responsible for 1.63% of total pollutant emissions – 23,000 million tCO2e – over the past 53 years.
“While global consumers, from individuals to businesses, are the ultimate emitters of carbon dioxide, our focus is on the fossil fuel companies that we believe have produced and marketed fossil fuels to billions of consumers knowing that their use, as planned, will worsen the climate crisis ”, details the director of the Institute, Richard Heede, in the document.
Saudi Aramco leads with 61.143 million tCo2e equivalent to 4.33%, followed by the Russian oil company Gazprom with 44.757 million tonnes or 3.17% of polluting emissions. The third place goes to the American Chevron with 43,787 million tonnes equivalent to 3.1%.
The institute stresses that if companies value their social license to operate, they must manage their business risks and commit to reducing future production and emissions of fossil fuels to keep the planet’s temperature below 1. , 5 degrees Celsius (° C), in addition to moving your capital. investments in renewable energies.
