Patricia Arquette, Spike Lee and Pedro Almodovar toast at the TIFF Tribute Awards

TORONTO – Actress Patricia Arquette and filmmakers Spike Lee and Pedro Almodovar are among the names being honored at the TIFF Tribute Awards tonight.

The annual gala fundraiser, held as part of the Toronto International Film Festival, has selected the three Oscar winners among the filmmakers to be celebrated on a night likely to be lacking in star power as the two Hollywood strikes unfold authors and actors.

Arquette will receive the TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award for her decades-long film career, which includes a supporting actress Oscar win for “Boyhood.” She is at the film festival with her feature film debut “Gonzo Girl.”

Lee was selected for the Ebert Director Award, which recognizes his influences, including his groundbreaking 1989 film “Do the Right Thing” and 2019’s “BlacKkKlansman,” which won him the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.

Almodovar will receive the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media, recognizing his leadership in combining social impact and cinema. He directed the Oscar-winning film “All About My Mother” and is premiering his new short film “Strange Way of Life” at this year’s festival.

Other honorees include “Free Guy” director Shawn Levy, who will receive the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award, as well as “Fear the Walking Dead” actor Colman Domingo and “Phantom Thread” actress Vicky Krieps, who both receive this year’s acting awards .

The TIFF Tribute Awards will be held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Proceeds will benefit the Viola Desmond Cinema campaign to rename the main theater at TIFF headquarters after the civil rights pioneer.
