An Ontario driver has been charged after police spotted a device on his vehicle that obscures the license plate with just the push of a button.
Accordingly Halton PoliceAn officer in Milton spotted a black Porsche Panamera 4S apparently driving without a license plate this weekend.
But when the officer looked closely, he found the driver was using a license plate obscuration device.
A tweetreleased by police on Sunday shows what appears to be a black retractable cover obscuring the license plate.
The license plate can be hidden by pressing a button in the driver’s seat, police said.
Police confirmed the driver was given two $110 tickets — one for a blocked license plate and the other for appearing to have no license plate — and additional charges could apply if he used the device to make the payment to avoid tolls.
A spokesman for the 407 ETR told CTV News that toll evasion in Toronto is taken “very seriously.”
“We are working to detect and prosecute toll evaders to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement said.
According to the Ontario Road Traffic Actit is illegal for any driver to cover their license plate.
“The entire license plate, including the numbers, is clearly visible at all times and the view of the license plate must not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumpers, any part of the vehicle, attachments to the vehicle, or the view of the license plate load borne.”
Obscuring license plates also makes it nearly impossible for speed, red light, and Highway 407 toll cameras to issue fines and fees.
