Labor Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has congratulated a Nigerian woman, Uzoma Asagwara, on her swearing-in as Minister of Health in the province of Manitoba, Canada.
Asagwara is also the deputy chief minister of the province.
In a series of tweets shared on his X (formerly Twitter) profile on Sunday, the former governor of Anambra State attributed Asagwara’s success to hard work and dedication.
The tweet said: “The swearing-in of young Nigerian Uzoma Chioma Asagwara as the new Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister of the Province of Manitoba, Canada was heartwarming.” The encouraging report once again highlights the ingenuity of Nigerians.
“According to the report, Asagwara was the first black person to achieve this position in Manitoba. I sincerely congratulate her on this achievement, which can only be achieved through hard work, dedication and devotion to duty.”
Obi said Asagwara was a role model of hard work for Nigerian youths. He added that he believes in the “greatness and infinite ingenuity of the Nigerian people.”
“It is a lesson in hard work for millions of Nigerian youths. I wish her success in her new position and encourage her to continue to strive for social progress both in Canada and in our country Nigeria,” he said.
Obi advocated for “progressive leadership” that would inspire the country’s youth to succeed.
“Just like Asagwara, many resourceful Nigerian youths will achieve greater success in their chosen fields of endeavor in the new Nigeria,” the tweet ended.
PUNCH Online reports that Asagwara, born in 1984, is a retired basketball player. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing from the University of Winnipeg and Brandon University, Canada.
She was born to Nigerian parents from Umuahia, Abia State. The 35-year-old is the first black queer person to win a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, Canada.
