Obama expresses support for Trudeau in Canadian election – News

Washington, Sept. 16 (EFE) .- Four days before the Canadian general election, former US President Barack Obama (2009-2017) backed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he hailed as an “effective leader “and a” strong voice “for democracy.

“I wish my friend Justin Trudeau all the best for the next election in Canada. Justin has been an effective leader and a strong voice for democratic values, and I am proud of the work we have done together,” said the former US president on Twitter.

Obama has enjoyed a strong friendship with Trudeau since the Canadian was elected Prime Minister in 2015 and also supported him at the polls in 2019.

This time, Trudeau arrives in the election next Monday with increasingly contrary polls and a damaged image. The polls indicate a tie or victory for Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole over the Liberal Trudeau Party.

Trudeau came to power in 2015, fiercely winning with an absolute majority 184 of 338 subjects in the House of Commons of Parliament.

However, after six years in power, Trudeau has a tarnished image on issues such as reconciliation with the indigenous population, welcoming refugees and defending women’s rights.
