Nigeria waged their own fight for equality ahead of the tournament as their coach, Randy Waldrum, criticized the Nigerian FA and was reprimanded.

“I think the players appreciated that I will stand up for them and speak on their behalf,” said Waldrum of his comments on the association’s financial support for his team.

“As a coach I have to be a voice for the girls and fight for the things they deserve.”

However, since the Super Falcons landed in Australia earlier this month, Waldrum and his team’s mindset has shifted from pay and conditions to the task at hand.

“Forget the distractions and just focus on the game,” said Oshoala, who plays for Barcelona.

It’s an opinion that Waldrum, who coaches the University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team, wholeheartedly supports.

“What we said is out there. Let’s put it aside for now and focus on football,” he said. “Everything has always revolved around football.”
