Week six is now over and two Canadians have scored a touchdown for a winning team. They were Nic Demski, slotback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from Winnipeg, Manitoba and Justin McInnis, wide receiver for the British Columbia Lions from Pierrefonds, Quebec.
Demski’s touchdown catch on Friday was dramatic because it came with three minutes and 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter, when the Blue Bombers were trailing the Calgary Stampeders 37-33. Zach Collaros then threw a 10-yard touchdown catch to Demski to put the Blue Bombers ahead 39-37. Demski then caught a two-point conversion from Collaros to put the Blue Bombers ahead 41-37 and end the scoring. Demski caught seven balls for 60 receiving yards for the Blue Bombers. This season he has 28 catches for 314 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Meanwhile, it was simply a monster game for McInnis, who tied the Lions’ franchise record for most catches in a game with 14 in the Lions’ 35-20 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. He finished the game with 243 receiving yards and a touchdown. McInnis also caught a touchdown. It came with four minutes and 58 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Roughriders a 10-0 lead. This season, McInnis has 45 catches for 725 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Three other Lions have managed 14 catches in a single game. Eric Streater was the first to do so in 1989, Ray Alexander did it in 1991 and Darren Flutie in 1995.
With the win, the Lions improved their record to 5-1 and took first place in the CFL’s Western Division. The Blue Bombers improved to two wins and three losses.
