NHL defender Jordie Benn ends career at 37

According to Scott Maxwell of the Daily Faceoff On Tuesday, former National Hockey League defenseman Jordie Benn of Victoria, British Columbia, retired at the age of 37. Benn played a dozen seasons in the NHL, playing with the Dallas Stars from 2011-2017, the Montreal Canadiens from 2017-2019, the Vancouver Canucks from 2019-2021, the Winnipeg Jets in 2021, the Minnesota Wild from 2021-2022 and the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2022-2023. Last season, Benn played professional hockey in Sweden with Brynas IF.

Benn has the distinction of having played for four Canadian NHL teams. The player who played for the most Canadian teams was defenceman Michel Petit from St-Malo, Quebec, who played for the Vancouver Canucks, Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers from 1982 to 1997.

In 607 NHL games, Benn scored 26 goals and 111 assists for 137 points. He was a +19 with 244 penalty minutes, eight power play points, six game-winning goals, four shorthanded points, 671 shots on goal, one faceoff won, 977 blocked shots, 751 hits, 132 turnovers and 402 turnovers. Benn’s faceoff won came in the Stars’ 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on November 7, 2013.

Jordie Benn is the older brother of Canadian Olympic champion Jamie Benn from Victoria. Jamie Benn won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Jamie Benn has had an impressive career with the Dallas Stars, winning the Art Ross Trophy in 2015 and being a two-time NHL All-Star in 2012 and 2016.
