New Board at Sail Canada >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

Sail Canada’s board of directors for 2021-2022 was confirmed following the annual general meeting held virtually on October 22, 2021. President Hugh McGugan (ON) was re-elected by acclamation and will begin his second term of two years at the head of the National Sport Organization. McGugan has spent the past eight years on the Sail Canada Board of Directors, the last two as President.

Founded in 1931, Sail Canada is the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the country.

General Manager Zac Baum (ON) will continue to serve on the Board of Directors of Sail Canada for a second three-year term, while Kelly Lyon (ON) will begin his first term as General Manager.

Baum is a former international athlete who is currently a doctoral student in medical imaging, studying new methods of using artificial intelligence in the field of medical imaging. During his first term, he served on the finance, governance and inclusiveness, diversity and equity committees.

Lyon is a field sailor, with a great experience of regional and national racing, for more than 20 years. She is currently working on her certification as a Club Racing Officer. In the past, she has been Counter-Comodore, Project Director for the Britannia Yacht Club and President of numerous Canadian regional and national regattas.

Lyon also has extensive experience in project management and planning large-scale IT development projects for government, and is currently working as a quality assurance / technical projects specialist for the federal government (finance ).

The other General Managers of Sail Canada are Barbara Pike (Halifax, NS), John O’Dwyer (ON), Kate MacLennan (AB) and Valérie Lavigne (QC), as well as Athlete Directors Rob Hemming (ON) ) and Mariah Millen (AU).

“First of all, I would like to welcome Zac Baum and Kelly Lyon to the board,” said McGugan. “Their experience combined with their passion for sport are definitely huge assets for our organization, which is moving forward with our new 2021-2024 strategic plan.

“I would also like to thank Torstein Braaten and Ian Wooden for their interest in serving on the Sail Canada Board of Directors and I hope they will continue their important and valuable commitments to the sailing community in the future.

“Finally, a big thank you to Bob Greenhalgh for his involvement on our board of directors over the past six years, particularly as chair of our fundraising and finance committees. ”
