Ministry of Health and Canadian University sign agreement for scholarship training and research – Demerara Waves Online News- Guyana

Guyanese doctors and ultimately patients are poised to benefit from specialized training and research in the health sector, under an agreement between the Ministry of Health and the ‘Mc Master University of Canada, said Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony.

“It’s a big problem in terms of postgraduate training for doctors. I hope we can send people into different sub-specialties, ”he told News-Tall Radio Guyana 103.1 FM / Demerara Waves Online News.

Dr. Anthony finalized the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state-funded Mc Master University during a recent visit to Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.

He was accompanied by Associate Professor of Pediatrics at McMaster University, Dr Narendra Singh, who is also President of Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK), a non-governmental organization (NGO) in partnership with Guyana to fight infant mortality.

The Department of Health said, “This MoU essentially sets in motion a partnership in which McMaster has agreed to facilitate the training of Guyanese physicians in various subspecialties. In return, McMaster will continue to expand its global health and research initiatives with a focus on Guyana.

The MoU was signed by the Minister of Health, Dr Anthony; Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Paul O’Byrne and Karen Belaire, Chair, Board of Directors, St. Joseph Health Systems, International Outreach Program.

McMaster Children Hospital President of Pediatrics Dr Angelo Mikrogianakis and McMaster Children’s Hospital President and Vice President of Women’s and Children’s Health Bruce Squires also attended the signing.

The Minister thanked several doctors who played a decisive role in the partnership to develop numerous postgraduate programs in Guyana. These include Dr Ronald Barr, Dr Brian Cameron, Dr Andrea Hunter, Dr April Tam, Dr Karen Baley and Dr Singh.
