Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made a significant U-turn in his migration policy. He recently praised Canada’s openness on migration issues, reporting “Fox News“But in the face of growing criticism over the economic and social impact of the policy, he announced that the number of low-paid migrant workers that Canadian companies can hire would be reduced by 10 to 20 percent.
Other reforms planned
Trudeau said out loud:Financial Time“We are looking at different migration flows to ensure that Canada remains a country that positively supports immigration, but also manages integration responsibly and paves the way for success.”
The new measures include an exemption for agricultural producers, particularly in remote areas where it is difficult to meet labour needs locally. In addition to limiting migrant workers, Trudeau is planning other reforms. In January, Ottawa capped the number of international students at 360,000 per year.
Migrants represent almost a quarter of the Canadian population
While some worry that ending the program will hamper the supply of cheap labor, others are praising the program, Fox News reports. Canada has welcomed 1.63 million new citizens since January 2018, with nearly a third coming from India, the Philippines or China. According to the Financial Times, more than 8.3 million people, or nearly a quarter of Canada’s population, were migrants in 2021.
