Mexico and Canada promote inclusion and cooperation in hydroelectricity

During their bilateral meeting, before the North American Leaders’ Summit, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, exchanged views on the priorities of each country and agreed to focus on the relationship to a humanist vision.

The leaders stressed that prosperity must be the result of actions that guarantee equality, security and development for peoples and the region as a whole.

“We are peoples, very close sister nations, we belong to North America and we have a lot in common and, above all, a very good relationship of cooperation and friendship,” said the Mexican president.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Canada said: “It is a pleasure for me to have the opportunity today to speak about all the issues that we have in common, as Indigenous peoples, in the leadership of the women and how great we are. allies ”.

Under the T-MEC, Mexico and Canada seek to advance towards more inclusive economic integration, in which youth, women and members of indigenous communities benefit from greater business cooperation.

In response, they agreed to maintain close cooperation in resilient supply chains to promote national security and strengthen emergency response capacity.

Nations have concluded three agreements: they will seek reconciliation with indigenous peoples and place indigenous communities at the center of public policies; fight against inequalities through equitable wealth redistribution measures and promote the competitiveness of the territory.

“They stressed the need to increase ambition in the fight against climate change, to ensure greater inclusion of all, especially indigenous peoples, and to create good jobs. They also discussed the important contributions that Canadian investments make to the Mexican economy, particularly in the transportation, energy and mining sectors, and they pledged to continue working together on common priorities, ”he added. indicated the Government of Canada.

In addition, the leaders agreed to work together to foster increased leadership and ambition in global health security, economic competitiveness and migration in the hemisphere, and agreed that their ministers and officials work together to further expand the bilateral cooperation.

Hydroelectric cooperation

They also discussed the deepening of cooperation in the field of hydropower.

At a press conference at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said the two countries will work in this area.

“This is a point where there is going to be important work between the two countries,” he said.

He specified that the Mexican intention is to invite the company Hydro-Quebec, one of the most efficient in the field, to support the modernization and the expansion of the hydroelectric stations in the country.

“There have been several conversations with them, the president wants to invite them, as he mentioned with Minister Trudeau, for the modernization of hydroelectric power stations and their expansion in Mexico and their transmission lines,” he said. concluded.
