The continued adventures of Alpha Flight
Due to budgetary concerns, the Canadian government temporarily disbanded Alpha Flight and Department H after the confrontation with Wolverine. Still, Hudson wasn’t about to give up the dream of forming a team and re-established the group as an independent entity. Legendary members Eugene Judd, aka Puck and Marrina Smallwood soon joined. During this time, Hudson also changed his superhero battle name from “Vindicator” to “Guardian”.
Early in the team’s storyline as an independent entity, they faced Eshu, also known as the Master of the World, an ancient caveman who was mutated by an alien race called the Plodex to become immortal. Alpha Flight successfully defeated the Master of the World, but their victory was short-lived. Shortly thereafter, Jaxon returned to Hudson’s life, aided by a supervillain team known as the Omega Flight. Hudson apparently died fighting the group.
Hudson’s wife, Heather McNeil, ran Alpha Flight after her husband’s death. Using the same technology that Hudson once did, McNeil has served as both defender and guard ever since. Eventually, under McNeil’s leadership, Alpha Flight once again worked with the Canadian government, with Gary Cody acting as liaison between the two companies. However, unhappy at his inability to control Alpha Flight, Cody let go of the villain Bedlam. The malevolent psychic then destroyed Cody’s mind and nearly destroyed Department H.
In general, Alpha Flight’s relationship with the Canadian government has remained tumultuous in the decades since the group’s inception. The early stories of Alpha Flight feature different team formations, surprise resurrections, secret clones, and more that made life extremely difficult for the team. Regardless of the circumstances, however, Alpha Flight always keeps the true north strong and free.
